SOFT SURFBOARD AUSTRALIA

What size surfboard should I get?
I am 6′2″ 220lbs and havent surfed a day in my life. Have water ski’d and thats about the extent of balance sports. I have heard Mini Mals are great and that they offer soft and semi hard boards. Any advice would be great as I have lived most of my life near Torquay in Australia and feel guilty not giving it a go.
I went straight to a hard board, 8′ and a tri-fin for better control…..would think a soft or semi-hard you’d get bored with too soon and would be wanting something faster and more maneuvarable.
